Life Stone (
Summary[]
Stunned by the view in front of them, the astronauts are speechless as Chrome calls out to them from ground control, asking what they see. The writhing black mass Kohaku had seen on the cameras previously is revealed to be a vast amount of petrification devices, floating in arcs.
Kohaku spots their device, the one in the capsule, and makes a move to retrieve it. Stanley stops her. Senku then begins communicating with it, confirming that the device itself had been the one to talk to them earlier. The devices are revealed to be machine life-forms of a sort, forming what the humans recognize as Why-man.
The device once more asks "do you wanna die?". The astronauts freeze, and on Earth, Gen begins assessing their negotiation angle. He suggests that the humans offer them a gift, and Senku figures out that they probably want maintenance done on them: he offers them new diamond batteries. In return, Senku wants them to "quit firing off those damn petri-beams".
It responds by asking "why?", and they hear the tell-tale click of the device priming. Stanley reaches for the gun, but a different device responds and asks that everyone be still. Stanley realizes that the devices do not act in unison.
Senku points out that the Petrification beam serves the purpose of offering something all beings want (everlasting life) in return for maintenance. Xeno exclaims the devices are in fact mechanical parasites that drive intelligent life to better itself in order to help them. The device agrees with what the humans have said, and begins explaining what happened from the beginning.
