Future Science (
Summary[]
Chelsea begins the chapter by retracing Byakuya's steps before he died, finding the river he took his last breath in on Treasure Island. Back in Japan, Chrome asks Kaseki if he'd like to get petrified, as he's unsure he'll last long enough to see the fruits of their labor. Kaseki says he'd rather live out the rest of his life normally, with everyone.
Back in the lab, Ryusui continues his confrontation with the petrification device, accusing it of deceiving humanity by faking a future message. It doesn't hide the truth of its actions, admitting it did it to unite humanity allowing them to work towards its goals. Ryusui is angry, and initially decides to not tell anyone about his discovery, but ultimately decides to tell Senku as it affects him the most. Before Ryusui can say anything, Senku opens the door, having heard the whole exchange.
Chrome accuses the device of being heartless, but Senku points out that a human heart isn't much different to a machine, and that the device is likely pretending to not understand human emotions. Caught, the device begins speaking less formally and requests to be brought up somewhere high to explain things. On the way, the device describes how in order to cope with the pain of living forever and watching everyone else die in the process, it switched off its emotional circuits. It promises that in the future, if humanity succeeds in creating a time machine, it will send a petrification beam over Byakuya's body.
Much like Senku and Chrome's earlier "do we succeed in making a time machine" tests, the gang race to find Byakuya's final resting place, as finding Byakuya's statue would imply successful time travel.
The chapter ends with the Kingdom of Science digging up Ishigami Village's graveyard.
